Morocco has a tradition of mosaic tile making, and nearby Spain a tradition of bas relief tiles.
After I replaced the school's kiln and found a local supply of clay, the students began hand-building. The assignment was to use what they had learned during the drawing units to create a shallow relief tile that told a story of an important event in their lives. They were also introduced to foreshortening, the basic chemistry of clay and glazes and some history of ceramic architectural decorations.
